Two clocks run at the same time, and it isn't the one most people watch that releases the money. The real timeline, the four conditions that stall it, and what $35 is actually worth.
Referral code
LOIO3A
Exclusive
I send you $10 by Interac e-Transfer on top of the Wealthsimple bonus, $35 total — after the claim form.

The most common misreading: assuming the bonus is triggered by signing up. It is triggered by the deposit. Signing up only opens a window during which the code can still be applied.
D0
Account opened
The code applies itself if you arrive through a referral link. Create the account without one and you have to type it in manually inside the mobile app — the step most people miss, and exactly where the code goes during signup.
Clock starts
D+7
Code window closes
Seven days after opening, the field disappears. An account created without a code and left alone for a week cannot be salvaged, not even by contacting support. It is the hardest limit in the program.
No going back
D+30
Qualifying deposit deadline
At least $100 has to arrive from an external institution within 30 days. The minimum went from $1 to $100 on February 25, 2026; guides still describing a one-dollar deposit predate that change.
$100 external
+24 h
The $25 lands
The bonus arrives in the Cash account, usually the day after the deposit. If extra identity verification is running, give it 5 to 10 business days before worrying.
Cash account
The $10 is not automatic
The Interac e-Transfer runs on a separate track: it is sent by ws-referral.ca rather than Wealthsimple, and only after you fill out the claim form on the home page once the account is open. No form, no transfer.
The blockers
Four things that stall the clock
A deposit that looks like a qualifying deposit without being one is by far the most common reason a bonus never shows up. The four cases:
The deposit came from inside. Moving money between two Wealthsimple accounts does not count, not even for $5,000. The transfer has to originate at a bank or credit union.
The deposit was under $100. A first deposit of $50 triggers nothing, and topping up later does not always fix it, depending on how the system recorded the transaction.
The code came after the money. Order matters: code first, deposit second.
The account isn't really new. An account closed three years ago is still on file. A fresh email address does not reset anything — the social insurance number behind it hasn't changed.
If every box is ticked and nothing has arrived after ten business days, the problem is somewhere else: run through the five-cause diagnostic before writing to support, since that is where the answer sits in the large majority of cases.
Perspective
$35 is small. Over 25 years, smaller.
A welcome bonus does not change a financial life, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. But the order of magnitude is worth stating. Here is what $35 becomes if invested once and left alone, by annual return:

Compound growth on a single $35 investment, before inflation and before tax. Hypothetical returns, not a promise: 6%/yr is a common long-run order of magnitude for a diversified portfolio, not a guaranteed rate.
The real math is elsewhere. On a $50,000 portfolio, a one-percentage-point difference in management fees costs about $500 per year — fourteen times the bonus, every year, without ever appearing as a line on a statement. Our investment fee calculator puts a number on the gap for your own balance. The bonus is the reason to open the account today; fees are the reason to choose where.
On the tax side the impact is minor but real: paid into a non-registered account, the bonus can count as other income. For $25 that means a few dollars — here is what to report to the CRA.
After the payout
From referee to referrer
Once the bonus clears, you become a referrer yourself. Your personal code is permanent, never changes, and sits behind the gift icon on the home screen: your own code inside the app.
What you earn as a referrer scales with what your referee deposits, from $25 to several hundred dollars on a large transfer. Wealthsimple also opens a $75 to $100 per-referral program from time to time, by invitation only; invitations to the boosted program generally go to active clients, which explains why some people see them and others never do.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Usually 24 hours after the qualifying deposit. Up to 5 to 10 business days if the account is under additional verification.
Both, for different things. The code must be applied within 7 days of opening; the $100 deposit must land within 30 days. The payout itself is triggered by the deposit.
No. Only a deposit from an external institution qualifies.
The Cash account, which is non-registered. The bonus does not eat into your TFSA or RRSP contribution room.
After the claim form, once the account is confirmed. It is sent by ws-referral.ca rather than Wealthsimple, and it is not automatic.
No. The bonus is for new clients, and a previously closed account generally disqualifies a second claim.
