Methodology

How the calculation
works

The calculator applies monthly compounding: your current savings and each of your contributions grow every month at the chosen annual return, until your retirement age. The capital is also shown in today's dollars (discounted by inflation), to give you a realistic sense of purchasing power.

The sustainable monthly income is estimated with the 4% rule: withdrawing about 4% of the capital in the first year (then indexing that amount) has historically given good odds of making savings last 30 years. In a TFSA, those withdrawals are tax-free; in an RRSP, they're taxed as income.
